Over the past three months, I cannot begin to count the number of festivals, fairs, carnivals and the like that I have photographed. At each one, there was always someone grilling meat over an enormous grill. Here, at the end of my internship is a tribute to all those grilling photos I shot. The thing is, I never made it a goal to shoot them, it just seemed to happen a lot. None of these photos are any good. This post is meant to be fun, so please do not judge my photography ability based on the next nine photos! ;)

Powered Paragliding

I got to do one of the most interesting things I've ever done this past week. I got the opportunity to go powered paragliding up in Bowling Green, Ohio. My boss showed me the website about this place, and suggested --given my love of flying-- that I give it a try. And try it I did. It was amazing. You are strapped onto a big propeller and use a paraglider once up in the sky to turn, go higher, land, etc. It was a thrilling experience. I highly recommend trying it out if you're at all interested in flight.

Kewpee Triathlon

I got up around 6:00 yesterday morning to photograph the annual Kewpee Triathlon. I really enjoyed it and would like the opportunity to shoot more events like this. Here are some of my images.

Travelled about an hour down to Celina on Saturday to photograph the Lake Festival. Unfortunately, it rained several times in the 2.5 hours I was there, but here's one photo I got out of it all.

Japan, a year later

Exactly one year ago, I was visiting my brother in Japan. It's hard to believe it's been an entire year already. It was without a doubt one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had, and it has made me want to make travel a staple of my life. As I was remembering my trip yesterday, I decided to go through all of my photos again and pick out ones that I had looked over before. This batch of photos is quite different from the photos that I've shown before. It's just a difference in style. I guess you could say these are the "second tier" photos since they were looked over the first time. I will let you be the judge.

Country Concert

Country Concert is northwest Ohio's answer to Woodstock... country style of course. Now that it's over, I wish that I had been able to go back for one more day after the festivities really kicked off. I was only able to spend two hours there on opening day. At the time, I was dreading going back for several reasons, but I know if I had been able to go back, I could have taken far more interesting and outrageous photos.

Man in the Hat

I was driving around today and saw all the crazy cloud formations and was really wishing that I could make something out of them. A few hours later at a car show, this man in the hat gave me the perfect opportunity. I think it's my best shot of the summer so far.

So my friend Justin Shimp decided to have a little fun with this photo and created an 8-bit interpretation of it. Haha, maybe we can commission him to do a few more.

Unusual Black and White

Golf is not typically a subject you (or at least, I) think about when thinking about black and white photography. Golf is a colorful sport. All the greens and yellows and the players typically wearing bright orange or red or blue shirts. The colors are vibrant, but today I wanted to see what golf would look like in classic black and white. Here it is.

The third photo is really just for fun. I love the way the sun bounced off the putter and makes it look like a laser putter!

Update after a while

This guy, along with 5 others are refugees from Burma. They are walking from Fort Wayne to New York in order to raise awareness about the political turmoil in Burma. They are also trying to get their elected leader, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, released from prison. Suu Kyi is the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Here a quick update after a week without. I had some interesting sounding assignments yesterday, unfortunately, I was in a car accident and didn't get to go to them. I'm back now though, with a new car and ready to shoot again. Most of these are from last week.

It's very peaceful for me just seeing the countryside roll by me. I think I get my love of driving from my dad.

Crazy second day

My second day at the Lima News was quite busy. I came in early to photograph the county's new hazmat truck, went to a baseball game, and then off to photograph a family that will be taking their RV to all 48 states in the contiguous USA. After all that, I went back to the office to edit my photos and less than 20 minutes after getting back, there was a house fire on the north side of town. Here is a sampling of some of my photos from the day.

First Day

During my first day at the Lima News, I was given an assignment to shoot an awards dinner. That went alright, but didn't produce any outstanding photos. After that, I needed to go out and find a feature and be back at the office in an hour and a half. I drove around town for about 45 minutes and didn't find anything that interesting, so I decided to park my car and walk around for a while. As I was crossing the street, I found this guy below. Not to bad a find for my first day on the job. Hopefully I'll be able to find more bizarre stuff like this in the weeks to come.

Reese Airport

Here are just some of the images I've shot while working on a story about Reese Airpot. This tiny one runway airfield outside of Muncie that has a fantastic atmosphere. There is a handful of regular guys who get together each weekend to talk aviation and take their Piper Cub up for a few hours each. There are some guys who work each weekend on their own kit airplanes, some people come out for flying lessons, and some are just there for the friendships. Everyone was extremely nice and welcoming to me as I was there to document the ins and outs of the airport, and I never had to ask for a ride, they were all generously offered to me. Being an aviation geek myself, this story was a hell of a lot of fun to work on and I want to thank everyone at the airport for being so kind to me. I'm sure I'll be back there one of these days, hopefully to take some lessons of my own!

It's interesting no matter how big cats get, you still want to take them home with you and see them sprawled across the living room floor. For the first of this blog, I thought I would share some photos that never made my Japan photo blog. These were three that I found after I got back and did a few more extensive edit sessions. Be sure to check back in a week when I begin my photo internship in Lima, Ohio where there are sure to be photos almost everyday. For now, enjoy the nice light from the beautiful country of Japan. A new blog for a new idea

Over the past three years of my college experience, I have had two different blogs. The first one was meant to chronicle the important photos that I would take throughout my time at college, however, due to my workload and laziness, it ended up being a look at my freshman year and little else. The second blog was all about my travels in Japan last summer. It highlighted my day to day activities as my brother and I roamed up and down the island. It was basically a travel log of what I was doing. I took a course this semester on Buddhism and during the Japan portion of the class, it hit me hard about how much I missed being there even though I wasn’t there much more than a month.

The idea behind this blog is trying to combine both those ideas. Ever since I was young I loved to travel. Traveling costs an awful lot of money, now more than ever, but you don’t always have to go far to travel. To me, traveling is doing something new and learning from it in the process. I gained so much from traveling the eastern United States with my family when I was younger, I gained so much from traveling to Japan with my brother, but I can learn just as much by traveling down the road and engaging in conversation with a stranger or attending a cultural event that is unfamiliar to me.

In this blog, I will take you on my travels, whether they are to distant lands or just down the street. Hopefully, you will be inspired, and I will be inspired myself, to get out there and… travel. I hope you will enjoy and continue to come back.
